How SEO & GEO Drove HCP Engagement for a Multinational Pharma Company
Our client is one of the world’s leading multinational pharma companies, with a global presence and a portfolio spanning highly competitive therapeutic areas, including diabetes and obesity.
We work independently with three of the company’s affiliates across the UAE, Kuwait, and Egypt, supporting their digital marketing and HCP engagement activities.
This case study focuses specifically on our SEO and GEO work with the UAE affiliate and its HCP portal.
Brief
For pharma companies, HCP portals play an important role in digital HCP engagement, providing healthcare professionals with access to scientific resources, educational content, and professional tools.
For our client, however, the portal had very poor search visibility, limiting its ability to attract HCPs through organic search.
When we started working on the portal, we identified two major barriers:
1. Google Had Difficulty Crawling and Discovering Pages
The portal had significant technical SEO issues affecting Google’s ability to crawl, discover, and index its pages.
Some pages were inaccessible to Google, while others required further technical optimization to become eligible for indexing.
As a result, valuable HCP content existed within the portal but had limited opportunity to appear in organic search.
2. Limited Searchable Content
As is common in the pharmaceutical industry, certain HCP materials need to remain gated due to regulatory and access restrictions, becoming available only after HCP verification or registration.
However, the portal had a very limited number of ungated pages available for search engines to crawl and index.
This limited the portal’s organic search footprint and reduced the number of entry points through which HCPs could discover the platform.
The challenge was to find the right balance between content that needed to remain gated and content that could be made discoverable through organic search.
Our Strategy
1. Fix the foundation before chasing rankings
The first priority was to make the portal technically accessible, discoverable, and indexable by search engines before focusing on rankings or content growth.
2. Build a Search-to-Registration Journey
We used ungated content as the organic entry point, then guided relevant HCPs toward deeper portal engagement, gated content, and registration.
To support this journey, the content strategy needed to reflect how HCPs actually search, including scientific terminology, clinical questions, disease and treatment terms, and professional information needs.
So, content needs to be optimized around HCP search intent and relevant keywords, prioritizing qualified organic traffic rather than search volume alone.
HCP search → relevant ungated content → portal exploration → gated value → HCP registration
Key Tactics
1. Technical SEO & Indexing
Audited the HCP portal to identify technical and structural barriers affecting crawling, indexing, and organic visibility.
We then worked page by page to resolve these issues and improve organic visibility.

2. Content Strategy & Enrichment
Worked closely with the client’s medical and marketing teams through regular brainstorming sessions and meetings to identify new content opportunities.
Together, we explored existing materials, such as webinars, educational activities, and scientific resources, that could be developed into valuable content for the portal.
Content decisions combined both sides of expertise. We evaluated HCP needs, search demand, SEO relevance, content freshness, and engagement potential, while the client’s medical, regulatory, and legal teams assessed what could be published and how.
This helped continuously enrich the portal with content that was both relevant to HCPs and compliant with regulatory requirements.
3. Gated & Ungated Content Optimization
Reviewed the balance between gated and ungated content to identify valuable materials that could be made publicly accessible where medically, legally, and strategically appropriate.
This expanded the portal’s searchable content footprint and created more organic entry points for HCPs.
4. Content Localization & SEO Adaptation
Adapted global content to local market needs and search behavior while maintaining scientific accuracy, regulatory requirements, and brand consistency.
5. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Structured and optimized medical content around clear topics, entities, questions, and contextual relationships to strengthen its relevance and understanding across traditional and AI-powered search experiences.
6. On-Page SEO Optimization
Optimized page titles, metadata, headings, content structure, and other on-page elements to improve content relevance and organic discoverability.
7. HCP Portal UI & UX Improvements
Improved navigation and content journeys to make it easier for HCPs to discover relevant resources and move from organic entry pages toward deeper portal engagement and registration.
8. Ongoing Performance & Opportunity Analysis
Through quarterly reporting, we tracked organic performance, HCP behavior, most-viewed content, and registrations to continuously improve the portal.
